Wentworth Africa Foundation has lead two group charity climbs up Mount Kilimanjaro, the first being in 2007 and the second in 2009. Check out the blog for the Epic Climb 2009 - to find out more about our adventure.
Here are what a couple of our participants had to say about their experience:
"It was an incredible adventure that I will remember for the rest of my life." – Chlan Grant
"It was such a positive experience and one of the proudest moments of my life." – Kelly Shaw
We raised close to $400,000 raised through the two Kili climbs and used the funds to build an administration block, dormitory, 5 classrooms, staff house, dining hall, kitchen, and lavatories at the Mnolela school in Lindi. The architecture plan has attracted a lot of attention and will be the model used for other schools in the Mtwara and Lindi region.
Mount Kilimanjaro is located completely within Tanzania, near the border of Kenya, about 340 km south of the equator. Most of Kilimanjaro is located within the Kilimanjaro National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Kilimanjaro is made up of three volcanic cones:
Kibo 19,340 feet (5,895 meters)
Mawenzi 16,896 feet (5,149 meters)
Shira 13,000 feet (3,962 meters)
Kilimanjaro is the highest elevation mountain on the continent of Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world, rising 15,100 feet (4,600 meters) from its base.
Kilimanjaro contains an example of virtually every ecosystem on earth - glacier, snowfields, deserts, alpine moorland, savannah, and tropical jungle.

The six day tented hike followed the popular Machame route, following steep paths through magnificent forests to gain a ridge leading thought the moorland zones to the Shira Plateau. It then traverses beneath the glaciated precipices of the south face of Kibo providing superb views of the Southern Ice Fields.
