HIV/AIDS continues to spread at an alarming rate in Africa. In the United Republic of Tanzania, about 7% of the mainland adult population is living with HIV, according to a 2005 United Nations study. In cities and towns, HIV prevalence averaged 11%, twice the levels found in rural areas.
The Wentworth Africa Foundation implemented a three-month HIV/AIDS awareness program beginning in April 2008. The objective of the program is to raise awareness and reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections in Mtwara.
A youth-focused outreach program is being developed with the assistance of the Ministry of Health, other non-government organizations and community leaders. The goal is to provide workshops to Mtwara youth detailing safer-sexual practices, HIV and STI transmission and to reduce the stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS.
