Artumas Africa Foundation

Why Are We Climbing?

In many parts of Tanzania, people live in conditions unfamiliar to most of us in the developed world, without access to basics like public education, jobs, clean water and power.

The Artumas Africa Foundation works closely with the communities of Mtwara and Lindi Administrative Districts in Southern Tanzania,  focusing on projects that are both sustainable and empowering. AAF has a strong track record with experience in many charitable activities ranging from HIV/Aids and malaria awareness programs, to grant and micro loaning through our enterprise development program. We have established a local vegetable farm, constructed business centers, and funded the construction and operation of local secondary schools.

In September 2007, twenty-six Artumas staff, friends and family came together to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to support the students of the Mnolela School in Lindi, Tanzania. By reaching the peak of the highest freestanding mountain in the world, the Artumas Africa Foundation raised an astounding $300,000 for this project.

The Foundation has shortlisted a number of worthy projects for 2009 which require funding, and we need your support. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but with every effort – building schools, a vegetable farm, and community centres - we are helping to change lives one at a time. And that matters.

With the $300,000 raised through the Kili climb in 2007, AAF committed to building an administration block, dormitory, 5 classrooms, staff house, dining hall, kitchen, and lavatories at the Mnolela school. The architecture plan has attracted a lot of attention and will be the model used for other schools in the Mtwara and Lindi region. Mnolela reconstruction is progressing and we are pleased to report 75% of the buildings have been completed. We are on track to finish construction by January 2009.

The provisions of these educational facilities will have a great impact on students and on the future of surrounding communities. Imagine the world of possibilities for those in need when we raise $1,000,000 through Epic Climb 2009.
